The Welsh artist Augustus John was a successful painter and draftsman, and a well known bohemian figure. He was in great demand as a portraitist, although his works were often controversial. During WWI he was employed by the Canadian government as a war artist in France. John visited the United States as a guest of the Carnegie Institute in 1923. Raymond McGrath was born in Sydney, where he graduated in Architecture in 1926. He spent most of of his life in Ireland, where for 20 years he was principal architect in Dublin's Office of Public Works. William Henry Walsh was born in Leeds on 10 December 1913. He was educated at Bradford and Leeds Grammar Schools, and studied at Merton College, Oxford. In 1936 he won a Junior Research Fellowship at Merton, focussing on philosophy. Between 1940 and 1941 Walsh served with the Royal Corps of Signals and then was employed by the Foreign Office, 1941-1945.
